Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. To foster a safe and rewarding relationship between children and pets, the NSW Government Responsible Pet Ownership program provides pet safety education to children, expectant parents, parents of young children, and antenatal professionals across NSW.
Educating children and their families ensures the child-pet relationship is not only physically and emotionally rewarding, but also safe. The program consists of three key components:
- Living Safely with Dogs – An interactive program for preschool children (4-5 years old) that teaches pet safety and responsible ownership using suitability-tested dogs, storytelling, song, dance, and role play.
- Living Safely with Pets – Designed for primary school children (5-8 years old), this program reinforces key pet safety messages through engaging, hands-on presentations.
- We Are Family offers a guide to nurturing the child and pet relationship from pregnancy to preschool years. The program makes information resources available through hospitals with antenatal programs and all maternal and child health centres throughout NSW.
The Responsible Pet Ownership Education program conducts approximately 1,500 preschool and school visits to around 40,000 students annually throughout NSW.
